With a partnership of almost 100 runs between their openers, South Africa got off to an extremely good start. Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma both batted gently and methodically to put pressure on the bowlers. Aiden Markram and Reeza Hendricks effectively stabilised the innings after their swift removal.

After Heinrich Klaasen and Reeza Hendricks were removed in rapid succession, the onus returned to the hitters. The hosts were disadvantaged by David Miller's prompt dismissal, which didn't help the situation.
