Shakib Al Hasan to lead Bangladesh in Asia Cup, World Cup

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has named veteran all-rounder Shakib al Hasan as their One-Day International (ODI) captain. Shakib will captain Bangladesh in the Asia Cup 2023 and the One-Day International World Cup later this year.

The announcement comes after southpaw Tamim Iqbal resigned as ODI captain and ruled himself out of the Asia Cup owing to a back issue.

Aside from the two major events, Bangladesh will play New Zealand in a white ball series in late September before flying to India for the World Cup, which begins on October 5.

"We've named Shakib as captain for the Asia Cup and World Cup." The squads for the World Cup and Asia Cup will be unveiled tomorrow. "The selectors will choose a squad of 17 players," said Nazmul Hassan, head of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

Shakib's last assignment as Bangladesh's ODI captain was against Ireland at Malahide on May 12, 2017, and the match finished in a draw.

Shakib has led Bangladesh in 52 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), 19 Tests, and 39 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), and his career as captain, which began in 2009, has been characterised by irregular stints.
