At the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday, former India opener Gautam Gambhir praised star batsman Virat Kohli for his game-winning effort against Australia.
The ODI World Cup 2023 in Chennai saw Kohli score an efficient 85 runs to lead his side to a six-wicket victory in the fifth match.
With six boundaries and multiple singles and twos, the 34-year-old produced another one of his chasing masterclasses as the Indian squad was reeling at 2/1 and eventually falling to 2/3.
Together, Virat and KL Rahul struck up an incredible partnership that helped the team escape difficulty, scoring 165 runs for the fourth wicket.
Virat's knock was praised by Gambhir, who said the younger players should learn from it how to handle pressure and put together an innings when hitting boundaries is difficult.
"Considere being two or three down for two. It's not possible for you to hit a long ball outside. It will still be necessary for you to be able to take the blows and attempt to switch up your strikes. And these up-and-coming cricket players will undoubtedly pick up tips from Virat Kohli. That is crucial, and it explains why he plays with such consistency," Gambhir stated on Star Sports.
"And I'm sure I think a lot of these young cricketers in the dressing room will learn the importance of fitness, the importance of running between the wicket, and the importance of how to rotate strike in the middle as well, because with this new format with T20 cricket, a lot of these new guys want to keep hitting the ball out of the ground.," he continued.
Virat became the top run scorer for India in white-ball ICC competitions, surpassing the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. It was his sixth 50+ score in 27 World Cup games, including two centuries.
In contrast, KL Rahul scored the game-winning runs at 97 and remained undefeated as the Men in Blue successfully reduced the total with 8.4 overs remaining.
