NEW DELHI: The iconic Mahendra Singh Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket on this day in 2020 (August 15, 2020), sparking an outpouring of emotions from billions throughout the world.

Dhoni, who is famed for his simplicity, tranquillity, and avoidance of social media mayhem, took to Instagram on August 15, 2020, and captioned the photo, "Thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout." Consider me retired as of 1929 hours."

The popular song 'Mai Pal Do Pal Ka Shayar Hu' from Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan's 'Kabhie Kabhie' played in the background of the video.

Dhoni's career included 350 ODIs, 90 Tests, and 98 T20Is.

India also achieved the number one rating in Test cricket under Dhoni's leadership.

In 2023, he helped Chennai Super Kings to their fifth IPL title. CSK won their fifth title under Dhoni's leadership.
