In the opening over of the innings, Starc took the wicket of Ishan Kishan for zero runs, despite his team only scoring 199 runs overall.

In spite of his team's dismal loss to India in Sunday's Match 5 of the ODI World Cup 2023 in Chennai, Australia's senior fast bowler Mitchell Starc made history.

In an attempt to put an end to the arduous and exasperating wait for an ICC trophy, the hosts India began their campaign with a bang and defeated the five-time champions by six wickets.

But Starc, an Australian fast bowler of great distinction throughout the years, made history by taking 50 wickets in ODI World Cups.

In the opening over of the innings, Starc took the wicket of Ishan Kishan for zero runs, despite his team only scoring 199 runs overall.

In eight overs, he finished with figures of 1/31. He has taken 50 wickets at an average of 15.14 in 19 World Cup games, with the best bowling stats being 6/28.

Starc became the fastest player to reach the 50-wicket mark in terms of balls taken as he accomplished the feat in just 941 balls during the World Cup. Malinga, who reached the record in 1,187 balls, is the runner-up in this instance. On this list, legends like McGrath, Akram, and Muralitharan rank lower than Starc.

Starc proved to be incredibly reliable in the 2019 edition, finishing with 27 wickets in just 10 matches. He established the record for the most wickets claimed in a single tournament edition.

In the 2015 edition, he also claimed 22 wickets at home, assisting Australia in winning the championship for a record-tying sixth time.

Australia's Glenn McGrath (71 wickets in 39 matches), Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan (68 wickets in 40 matches), Lasith Malinga (56 wickets in 29 matches), and Pakistan's Wasim Akram (55 wickets in 38 matches) are the top wicket-takers in World Cup history.

Speaking about the game, Australia was bowled out for 199 runs after choosing to bat first, despite making good middle-overs efforts.

India defeated Australia in 49.3 overs thanks in large part to Ravindra Jadeja, who was instrumental in the victory.

Early in the chase, the Rohit Sharma-led team was having trouble keeping up, battling at 2/3, until Virat Kohli (85) and KL Rahul (97) joined forces in the middle.

Before Virat was bowled out, the two combined 165 runs for the fourth wicket. Rahul then proceeded to stay undefeated and hit the winning runs with 8.4 overs remaining.
