Following this defeat, England's net run rate dropped, placing them in ninth place overall in the points standings.
Heinrich Klassen's (109 off 67 balls) first World Cup century, which featured 12 fours and 4 sixes, helped South Africa post 399 runs in the opening innings.
After Reeza Hendricks scored 85 off 75 balls and Rassie Van Der Dussen scored 61 off 60 balls, Klassen amassed 151 runs alongside Marco Jansen (74 off 42 balls).
The Proteas bowlers dominated the entire England batting lineup, taking seven wickets for 87 runs when England was chasing 400 runs. Gerald Coetzee claimed three wickets to end England's innings at 170 runs.
With a net run rate of -1.248, England has now fallen to ninth place.
India and New Zealand, the two undefeated teams in the competition, will play each other on Sunday in Dharamshala's HPCA Stadium.
