South Africa unveils strong 15-player squad for the upcoming Pakistan tour; vice-captain Chloe Tryon opts out of the series
Sune Luus, the South African women's team's captain, stepping down after the selectors revealed a 15-member squad for the forthcoming limited-overs tour of Pakistan beginning September 1.
Luus' decision to resign comes as a surprise given that she led the Proteas to the final of the T20 Women's World Cup earlier this year at home.
Cricket South Africa is expected to name a new captain soon, as the squad departs for its first-ever trip of Pakistan in a few days. Between September 1 and 14, the team will play three T20Is and three ODIs.
The tour's matches will all be held in Karachi. The one-day international series is crucial because it is part of the ongoing ICC Women's Championship 2022-25 cycle.
The tour squad has preserved the nucleus that was part in South Africa's near-miracle effort at the T20 World Cup earlier this year, with 12 players from that side retained. The biggest surprise is the absence of veteran Chloe Tryon, who requested and was granted a leave of absence.
Mieke de Ridder, a young wicketkeeper-batter, could make her international debut. Nondumiso Shangase has been recalled to the squad. She was last seen on the pitch in 2021.
