This Mumbai Indians star gets maiden call-up for Nation as South Africa announce white-ball squads for Australia series
The Proteas squad has been revealed for the upcoming series against Australia. In preparation for the 2023 ODI World Cup, South Africa will play Australia in a three-match T20i series as well as a five-match ODI series.
Known colloquially as 'Baby AB' because his batting approach is similar to that of fellow South African, AB DeVilliers.
The Mumbai Indians selected Dewald Brevis in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction for the 2022 season. He has also played for the Carribean Premier League, representing the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots.
He rose to prominence after being named Player of the Tournament in the 2022 Under-19 Cricket World Cup, where he hit two centuries and three fifties, totaling over 500 runs.
The Proteas will utilise the series against Australia to put Brevis through his paces and see whether he can make the ODI World Cup squad.
Brevis has the potential to be the X factor for any team he plays for, and his reputation as a 360 player with the bat who can also contribute with the ball on a part-time basis will be on the selector's mind when deciding on his selection.
Quinton de Kock, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Anrich Nortje, and Kagiso Rabada have all been rested for the T20 series.
Temba Bavuma will captain the ODI team, while Aiden Markram will captain the T20 team.
Because some of the major players in the T20 squad were rested, allrounder Donovan Fereira and wicket-keeper batter Matthew Breetzke were called up for the first time to the South African T20 squad, along with bowler Gerald Coetzee.
