Sunil Narine of the West Indies and the Trinidad & Tobago Knight Riders is the first cricketer to be shown a red card. The Caribbean Premier leauge (CPL) 2023 has implemented a new'red card' rule to rein in clubs' bad over-rates in the T20 division.
The slow over-rate rules for the CPL 2023 season are as follows…
- If the requisite over rate is not met at the start of the 18th over, one more player must enter the fielding circle, making a total of five players inside the circle.
- If the team is behind the rate at the start of the 19th over, two more fielders must enter the fielding circle, bringing the total to six inside the circle.
- If a team is behind the rate at the start of the final over, it will lose a player from the field (chosen by the captain) and have six players inside the fielding circle.
- Batting teams will also be expected to keep the game moving. After the umpires' first and final warning, the batting team will be assessed a five-run penalty for each incident of time wasting.
With TKR trailing on their over-rate at the start of the last over, the umpire showed Kieron Pollard's team the red card, forcing Narine to leave the pitch for the final over.
In the penultimate over of the innings against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, the Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan-owned franchise must field with only 10 men.
Narine was the pick of the Knight Riders' bowlers, taking 3/24 in 4 overs and dismissing Joshua da Silva for 18, Jyd Goolie for 11, and Corbin Bosch for 30 off 21 balls. The Patriots scored 178 for 5, with skipper Sherfane Rutherford leading the way with 62 off 38 balls, including five sixes and four fours.
In response, the Knight Riders chased down the target in 17.1 overs, with Nicholas Pooran top-scoring with 61 off 32 balls with four sixes and five fours, skipper Pollard hitting 37 off 16 with five sixes, and Andre Russell remaining undefeated on 23 off 8 balls with two sixes and two fours.
